"I pitched my business idea to a friend but they ended up opening the same business at my exact location." This is a very common story.

What should you do in such a scenario?

Here is what you should do when someone steals your business idea: Just stick to your plan. Period!

Let me break this down for you. It won't be long, I promise. Running a business is like solving a mathematical equation. You'll need numbers and a formula. The two will give you results, in this case PROFITS.

MARKETING + INNOVATION= PROFITS

Your friend may have stolen your idea, but not your dream and thoughts. Actually, celebrate that they did. Thank them if you can. I'm 100% serious! They gave you something you needed to make it, COMPETITION! There would be no Safaricom without Airtel, Jubilee without Nasa, Samsung without Tecno etc. Businesses thrive out of competition. The late Bob Collymore would tell you that to your face. Now here's my last take.

There are many "mtumba" sellers in Gikomba. But others are making millions out of the same hustle where some are making thousands. What's the secret? Innovation & marketing. The lady's post was on fruits. Now here is your "bizzsaver" if you get to see this. Someone tag her.

Go ahead with your plan. Bring your mkokoteni to the same location you wanted. But do this in addition to make you the "Safaricom" while s/he remains to be an "Airtel."

1. Pimp Your Mkokoteni with some bright colours that denote cleanliness.

2. Offer a free service. Wash the fruits (as your client watches) and pack them nicely for them. Say something nice in the process. It really matters.

3. Look for a white dust coat. There's something about this attire. I just find myself going for the guy with the coat even when they're selling air like Ngirita. With your mask on, you'll be Dr. Fruits. Hey, I just gave your business a name.

4. If they brought a child with them, offer the kid half an orange or a banana for free. That's love. You win the kid's heart, you win the guardian, and the neighborhood.

I'm done. Remember, you're unique. Do this, and come back with a testimony. God tells us that "You have not, 'cause you ask not." James 4:2-3. Ambia Baba akupee favour and watch your business boom. Some people are a blessing in disguise.

Better that one who just used your idea... This one pretended to want to partner with me, since the idea was mine I disclosed the business secrets to him, told him where to get the raw materials which are rear.. Shock on me he went to buy all the raw materials that was available at the market and started the business himself...

It will feel like betrayal but don't dwell on that. Focus on your plan and keep working smart. Don't be envious. Use your energy and ideas constructively. Remember there are many other people doing the same thing....there is enough sun for everyone. So if your friend decided to do it out of malice, it will not last. But don't spend time waiting for the downfall. Spend time building yourself and biz

I had employed this girl at my shop and eventually decided to fire her when she became hot headed. Well, she got a stall right next to my shop and opened her own, exactly like mine. I do mpesa n bank agents so she told people she'd do the same. Of course she got the mpesa line and stocked her shop and told our customers that we had opened a new branch they can deposit float from her too. She went to the banks to get the agencies and shock on her, they are not handed out easily like mpesa lines. We were disrupted at first but our loyal customers still remain. We have improved our customer service and we're doing well.

You must be careful with friends. I told my friend of a gift I was to buy a pastor, then she rushed to buy it to overtake me. Its not like the pastor had requested. Some people's brains are zero innovative, they can't have own ideas, but worry not, you can still go ahead with your plan because you are sure not to share how to sustain and grow it with them. See, that my friend 'to date' bought an (over over) radio call instead of a propeller.....kumbe ata hakuelewa what I meant exactly....

Put on some clean white apron's with a chefs cap, or do a full clean waitress's uniform like.... Don't fear approaching shops are open in that area too for sale, some of those shopkeeper's don't even want to go out to look for lunch/snacks...I have a friend who as always taken all my ideas and run ahead to start but am never bothered coz i value our friendship than the ideas...since am sure i can one day buy their shops and implement my dream.

Nice but it depends on who's stealing your idea. Some people are just brilliant with studying markets and penetrating them. You'll find yourself doing research on consumer behavior while he or she already have in place service recovery strategies😂 The business world is not for the weak but for those who are strong, persistent, and innovative.

Very true. The 'thief' is actually a blessing in that they save you the costs of testing your idea. No success ever started at the top, it all starts with testing, improvement, start-up, innovation and leadership.

People can steal the idea but from experience they cannot still the drive. Their motivation is money, your motivation is BIRTHING an idea and PASSIONATELY seeing it come to FRUITION.
A while ago a relative swindled me a phones shop, not long after 1½ year he closed one and returned it to me, I resumed passion and customer care to it and within 3 months sold it for 300k.

What I'm I saying, your skills are soft than the hard ones . Soft skills as the author said , not with exact words though, are inborn and no one can steal them

Advice on point.I always believe that as long as you're the owner of the idea, when it's stolen that shouldn't worry you.A great % of those who steal people's ideas always give up along the way. So,it's best to stick to your original plan, giving it the best you can that makes you stand out from the many similar ones.

True. I know a lady whose idea was stolen by someone she tried to partner with.
She still went on with her idea and is going strong five years later.
Proper execution is more important than an idea.
